April 2024 Newsletter

Hope April 1st doesn't fool us like last year.

Sunday hikes start at 2:30 pm, go approx. 5 miles, last 1 1⁄2 – 2 hrs.

Tuesday hikes start at 07:00 pm, go approx. 3 miles, last about 1 hour.

The SPHC walks at a moderate speed of 2.5 -3.5 mph. (17-24 min. mile)

Hikers are expected to maintain that pace. Hikes start on time.

Long time SPHC member George Hunkins passed away peacefully in the hospice at Cerenity Humboldt Assisted Living facility. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on May 18th at St Clements Episcopal Church, 901 Portland Ave., St Paul. Post 8 will conduct a brief memorial before the service.

THE SPHC SPRING SOCIAL 2024...THE SPHC SPRING SOCIAL 2024...
will be on Sunday, April 28 at Jimmy’s, 3565 LaBore Rd., Vadnais Heights. Social hour at 5:30 PM followed by dinner at 6:30. Entrees: Pistachio Crusted Walleye with lemon butter sauce, served with Wild Rice Blend ($36.95) OR Stuffed Pork Chop with Sage Stuffing, Roasted Baby Reds and mushroom bordelaise sauce ($31.95) Dinner choices include tossed salad, vegetable medley, coffee, rolls & butter. Reservation deadline is April 10th. Include entree choice in response. Guests welcome. Stats from mileage director, Rick Nelson:

The average starting point of all hikes so far is a point on the East side near Hyacinth Ave and Forest St near Phalen Park.

Temperature of the non canceled hikes: 2 hikes in the 20’s F, 8 in the 30’s F and 5 in the 40’s F.

Highest elevation starting point of a hike was Judy Nelson’s hike from the Oakdale IHop on February 9th. 1049 feet above sea level.

Earth day, April 22, 2024 No Earth, No Life.
